Greta Thunberg, Who is She? What is Her History?
Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg (born January 3, 2003) is a well-known Swedish environmental activist who has called on international leaders to take immediate action to mitigate climate change.
Thunberg began her advocacy as a child by attempting to persuade her parents to reduce their own carbon footprint through lifestyle changes. In August of 2018, she began spending her Fridays outside the Swedish Parliament holding a placard that read “Skolstrejk för climate” to advocate for more aggressive climate change mitigation measures (School strike for climate).
Thunberg rose to prominence due to her young age and the directness and bluntness of her public and political speeches, in which she chastised world leaders for failing to address the climate crisis.
Greta Thunberg, Who is She?
Thunberg, who was 15 at the time, became known around the world for her protests in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018. She was planning a strike for the whole school to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
Her small action had a big impact, leading thousands of young people around the world to start their own protests. By the end of 2018, more than 20,000 students from the UK to Japan had joined her protest by staying home from school.
In 2010, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the first time. In 2011 and 2013, she was nominated again.
What Are People Saying About Her?
Thunberg has been backed by climate activists, scientists, and well-known people in the public eye. Sir David Attenborough, a well-known naturalist, and TV host told her he was happy for her and said, “You have done what few others have been able to do.” You have upset people all over the world.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Prince Harry said of Thunberg’s activism, “Every country, community, school, group of friends, and family needs their own Greta.”
Alok Sharma, the president of the COP26 summit, said that Thunberg’s 2019 UN speech made him “very uncomfortable” because it was like looking in a “mirror” at his generation. But not all politicians have been so nice.
Vladimir Putin called her a “nice but uninformed young person,” and Donald Trump said she needed to “work on her anger management problem.”
