High School Career
As a freshman, he went to Heritage High School in Palm Bay. The next year, he went to Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Ossining High School in New York is where Toppin went to the school when he was in his junior year. His mother and younger brother also moved there.
It was his only year on the team at Ossining High School. He averaged 20.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steal as a senior, and he led the team to its first conference title in 10 years. Toppin chose to go to Mt. Zion Preparatory School in Baltimore, Maryland, for a year after graduating from high school.
This is how he did in the games: He scored 17, grabbed 8, and set up four assists. He also went up 4 inches to 6 feet 9 inches, so he now stands at 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m). A lot of colleges had offered him money to play college basketball. He chose to play for the University of Dayton instead of going to Rhode Island or Georgetown or Georgia or Texas A&M or Minnesota or Texas Tech.
College Career
Toppin didn’t play in his first game because he was found to be ineligible because of his grades. Toppin led the Flyers with 14.4 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game as a redshirt freshman. He was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week seven times, and he was named Rookie of the Week seven times.
During the season, he told the NBA about his plans for the 2019 draught. He didn’t hire an agent. To withdraw from the NBA draught and return to Dayton, Toppin chose not to play for any of the teams he had tried out for.
Toppin was named to the Karl Malone, Lute Olson, and Naismith Award watch lists for his red-shirt sophomore year. He was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 first team. It also said that Toppin was the 44th-best college basketball player going into the 2019–20 season. He was also named the 24th-best prospect for the 2020 NBA draught by ESPN.
After that, he was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week again and was named National Player of the Week by NBC Sports.
He was on the Wooden Award watch list at the end of the season and was named the Midseason Player of the Year by The Athletic.

After the season, Toppin said that he would be skipping his last two years of eligibility so that he could play in the NBA draught in 2020. Professional Career
A draught called the NBA 2020 draught will take place on November 18, 2020. The New York Knicks will pick Toppin with the eighth pick. He signed a deal for rookies with the Knicks on November 23. The Indiana Pacers beat Toppin’s first game in the NBA on December 23.
He scored nine points, had three rebounds, and blocked two shots in 24 minutes, but the Pacers won 121–107. Toppin missed 10 games because of an injury he got in his first NBA game. On January 13, 2021, he came back in a 116–109 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.
He was invited to take part in the 2021 NBA Dunk Contest and came in second place. Toppin won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2022. The next season, he was the winner of the contest.
On April 8, 2022, Toppin scored 35 points in a 114–92 victory over the Washington Wizards. This was a new high for him. He scored 42 points on April 10 in a 105–94 win over Toronto. This was his best score ever.

He also played for the Brooklyn Kings of the U.S. Basketball League, the Harlem Strong Dogs of the American Basketball Association, and the Dominican Republic, where he was a professional.
As a member of the Court Kingz, his father was also known as “Dunker’s Delight.” His brother, Jacob, moved from Rhode Island to play college basketball for Kentucky after he didn’t want to stay there.
