Barbara Broccoli and Whoopi Goldberg Explain Why “Till” is Told From the Mother’s Perspective
Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Broccoli have said that telling the story of Emmett Till’s murder through the eyes of his mother, Mamie, was “very important” to them.
The movie is about what Mamie Till (Danielle Mobley’s character, Deadwyler) did after her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, was taken, tortured, and killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The story takes place in Mississippi in 1955. Alma Carthan is Emmett Till’s grandmother. Goldberg, who is also the show’s executive producer, plays Alma Carthan.
During a recent Q&A in London after a screening, producers Goldberg and Broccoli talked about why they chose to tell the story from Till-point Mobley’s point of view and why they never thought about telling it any other way.
“”We felt it was basically a mother-son love story,” Broccoli told FilmNews, explaining why it was important to tell the story from her point of view. The film was written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, who also directed Clemency in 2019.
She agreed with Goldberg and Broccoli about the film’s point of view. The three also agreed that the film shouldn’t show the violent events that led to Emmett Till’s death.
“She was adamant about only showing what happened after the fight. “We were just so happy because we all thought she was right,” Broccoli said. “It’s not necessary to look at it. No one had to look at it.
We can tell from how it looks and how it sounds what it is. We didn’t make a long noise, but you knew what was going on. In this movie, what matters is what she does about what happened to her child “Goldberg added.
Broccoli went on to say that she wants the movie to be a tribute to Till-Mobley, who died in 2003, and that she hopes it will teach people about her as a person and as a leader in the civil rights movement.
