Brian May, Guitarist for Queen, Has Been Knighted in the United Kingdom’s 2023 Honors List
Brian May, the guitarist for the band Queen, has been knighted and given the title “Sir.” May is listed as “Dr. Brian Harold May CBE, Musician, Astrophysicist, and Animal Welfare Advocate for Services to Music and Charity” on the New Year Honors list for 2023.
This is the first list since Queen Elizabeth II’s death. People from all walks of life in the United Kingdom, including the arts, sciences, TV and film, fashion, philanthropic work, and more, are recognised on the New Year Honors list for their achievements and service.
In 2005, May was given the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Queen Elizabeth II gave May a CBE and a knighthood for his “services to the music industry and charity work.” Anita Dobson, who has been married to May for 22 years, can also call herself Lady May.
May said in response to the award, “I’m happy and thankful to get this honour.” I will see the knighthood as a charge, a commission, to keep fighting for justice and speaking up for people who can’t speak for themselves. I’ll do my best to be worthy, to be that knight in shining armour.”
