Jenna Ortega, the Star of Wednesday, Wishes She Had Done More in the Viral Dance Scene
Even though the 2022 TV show Wednesday just came out at the end of the year, it has already broken several records and become a cultural phenomenon.
Based on The Addams Family, the teen drama series follows high school student Wednesday Addams as she deals with supernatural forces and growing pains at Evermore Academy.
One scene from Wednesday that really stuck with streaming service viewers was when the main character, played by Jenna Ortega, danced to The Champs’ “Goo Goo Muck” in a strange and hypnotic way.
The dance quickly went viral and was remixed. Thousands of people copied the dance and dressed up as the character on TikTok to remixes of Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.”
The trend has become so popular that the #wednesdaydance tag on TikTok has already been seen more than 1.6 billion times. But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet, Ortega said that, as surprised as she is that the dance has gone viral, she has a few regrets.
Even that, I can’t believe, because some of the moves were planned and some were made up on the spot,” Ortega said of the dance’s virility.
“That was one of the scenes that kept me up at night because I felt like there was so much more I should’ve done and could’ve done. So the fact that anyone has liked it or even tried it themselves is kind of—hard it’s for me to understand.
In a previous social media post, the star of the Netflix show said that Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and old videos of goths dancing in clubs in the 1980s were some of her dance inspirations.
Since the release date for Wednesday season, 2 is still unknown, it may be a while before we see Ortega back in the role. In the meantime, you can watch her in Scream 6, which will come out later this year.
