Paul Mescal, Star of Aftersun, is Circling Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Sequel
Ridley Scott is working on a sequel to his multiple-Oscar-winning film Gladiator (2000), and the latest word is that Normal People and Aftersun star Paul Mescal is in talks to play the lead role.
Gladiator made Russell Crowe a well-known actor. Based on Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 novel Those About to Die, the movie is a historical fiction about the revenge of former Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius, whose family is killed by the cunning emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Commodus’s sister Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) is said to have a son named Lucius, and Paul Mescal is expected to play the part. Last year, Scott made The Last Duel, which was another swords-and-sandals movie.
However, the movie did not do well at the box office. Scott, Scott Free President Michael Pruss, and Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon Entertainment will all work together to make Gladiator 2.
Mescal, who played Connell Waldron in the miniseries Normal People and was nominated for an Emmy, is now being talked about for an Oscar for his role as a troubled father in Aftersun.
He will also be in Strangers by Andrew Haigh, along with Andrew Scott and Claire Foy. Scott’s next movie is an epic about history called Napoleon, which stars Joaquin Phoenix.
