Simone Biles Calls for Fairness for Jordan Chiles After Her Teammate Lost Olympic Bronze Medal
Simone Biles wants “justice” for her fellow Team USA gymnast, Jordan Chiles.
Earlier this month, Chiles was stripped of the bronze medal in the women’s floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics following an inquiry by the Romanian Olympic committee. The medal was reallocated to Romania’s Ana Barbosu, who moved to third place, while Chiles ultimately placed fifth.
The silver medallist in the women’s floor final, Simone Biles, stated that she had her teammate’s back in an interview with People that was published on Monday, August 26.
Do we believe they followed the right procedures in order to reach this decision? No. That’s the main reason we’re going to continue encouraging and supporting Jordan and seeking justice for her,” stated Biles.
The eleven-time Olympian also talked about how, despite the drama surrounding the floor final, she has been attempting to lift Chiles’ spirits.
We’ve been messaging, FaceTiming, and just being females. One day, when we spoke, I said to her, “You know what, Jordan, you have to feel all these feels.” stated Biles, 27. “Don’t let these feelings deter you. The healthiest method to deal with anything will be this.
Biles continued, saying of her Team USA colleague, “We saw what you did.” “And it’s a terrible situation because this kind of thing has never happened before. It’s really unfortunate, but we wish all three girls could win the medal, but that’s not how gymnastics works.”
Chiles, 23, finished fifth in the competition on August 5 but advanced to third when Team USA approved an investigation on the difficulty of one of her tricks.
Team Romania filed their own investigation the next day, claiming that the United States’ request for review was sent to the judges four seconds too late. Romania won the decision made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In a statement released on Thursday, August 15, Chiles addressed the medal reallocation for the first time. “The amount of love I have experienced in the last few days is overwhelming. In addition, Chiles expressed his sincere gratitude to the USOPC, USAG, coaches, teammates, fans, and family for their steadfast support throughout this trying period.
“As I was enjoying my Olympic victory, I received the heartbreaking news that my bronze medal had been taken away. I trusted USAG’s appeal since they provided solid proof that my score complied with all regulations. Chiles said, “This appeal was not successful.
The athlete claimed she was at a loss for words over the “unjust” ruling, which she described as a “big blow” in general.
The IOC’s ruling will be appealed by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
The organization stated on August 11 to the Associated Press, “We strongly believe that Jordan deserved the bronze medal. There were significant mistakes made in both the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) initial scoring and the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) appeal process that need to be corrected.
The first mistake happened in the FIG’s scoring, and the second occurred during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not provided sufficient time or notice to properly contest the decision.”
