Steve Kerr was born on September 27, 1965, in Beirut, Lebanon. He is the son of Ann (née Zwicker) and Malcolm H. Kerr. who was a faculty member of the American University of Beirut and became its president as well. He has a sister named Susan and two brothers named John and Andrew. His paternal grandparents, Stanley and Elsa Kerr moved to the Middle East as volunteers.
He went to Cairo American College in Egypt and the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon, and then attended Palisades High School where he played for the Palisades Dolphins basketball team.
He didn’t have an easy life and suffered his father’s loss. In his freshman year attending the University of Arizona, he got to know that his father was killed by the Islamic Jihad on the morning of January 18, 1984. This incident deeply affected him.
He continued playing basketball. From 1983 to 1988, Steve Kerr played five seasons for Arizona and appeared in 129 matches, and scored an average of 11.2 points per game.
He was a member of the USA basketball team, In addition, won the gold medal in the FIBA World Championship in Spain in 1986.
