Travis Kelce named Polsinelli Sportsman of the Year at the 51st Kansas City Sports Awards
In recognition of his on-field accomplishments during the 2023–2024 NFL season, Travis Kelce received an award.
On Tuesday, August 27, at the 2024 Kansas City Sports Awards, the 34-year-old tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs was named the Polsinelli Sportsman of the Year. The Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation hosts its 51st annual event to award deserving people for their accomplishments and dedication to sports.
“We appreciate you and are eager to see you guys again. Thank you.” In footage released by X, Kelce was heard saying to the audience at the ceremony, “Thank you for everything you do in this community.”
“I came out tonight to make sure you guys saw the faces of the people who love you guys just as much as you love them. I’ve been here for 12 years, and I appreciate the support. I truly appreciate all of you.
Held at the Kansas City Downtown Marriott Muehlebach Tower, the event recognized a total of six sports stars. After the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce was acknowledged for being the NFL’s career leader in postseason receptions.
“These honorees represent the best of our local sporting community as Kansas City continues to generate unprecedented excitement for its national and international sporting events,” stated in an earlier statement this month Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission.
“These people and their organizations work together to drive Kansas City’s opportunity, fan engagement, and awareness.”
Coach of the Year went to Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in addition to Kelce, and Construction Executive of the Year went to Commissioner Brett Yormark.
The T-Mobile Legacy Award went to sports executive Bill Hancock, while the Children’s Mercy Kansas City Sportswoman of the Year Award went to artistic gymnast Aleah Finnegan, who had just returned from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The annual Community Champion Award was given to the Victory Project, a sports-related charitable endeavor in Kansas City that improves the lives of children with cancer and funds research into childhood cancer.
It’s not just in Kansas City that Kelce is getting recognition. The athlete was listed by NFL Network as one of the top 10 players in the NFL last season last week. He became the highest-paid tight end in the NFL and secured his status on the squad through 2027 when he inked a $34.25 million two-year contract extension in April 2024.
Regarding his retirement before the 2024–2025 season, Kelce told reporters:
“I can’t put a time frame on it.” “I enjoy going to work each and every day. Of course, I’m aware that I have options outside of football, and you have to remember that I’m still a little child when I enter this place.
In the meantime, Kelce’s popularity is exploding off the football field. Apart from presenting the upcoming season of Are You Wiseer Than a Star? Since appearing in Happy Gilmore 2 and FX’s Grotesquerie, he and his brother Jason Kelce have achieved remarkable success with their podcast, “New Heights.”
Since its premiere in 2022, the program, which offers their sharp opinions on anything from sports to other topics, has garnered numerous accolades.
Prior to the release of their third season, it was revealed earlier this month that the siblings had signed a nine-figure agreement with Wondery on Amazon.
The brother duo said in a statement, “We couldn’t be more excited to team up with Wondery for the next phase of New Heights.” “We adore this program and the audience that has developed alongside us over the previous two seasons.
Wondery is aware of our common goal and will provide a plethora of tools and experience to help us reach new heights! Together, with this relationship, we are going to produce some truly innovative moments. We can’t wait to begin Season 3; see you soon!
