Haslem was born on June 9, 1980, in Miami. He is the son of John (Father) who played college basketball for the Stetson Hatters from 1972 to 1974 and Debra (Mother) who was Puerto Rican. Haslem went to Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, and then enrolled at Miami Senior High School in Miami. He played for its basketball team and he led the Miami High to state titles in 1997 and 1998.

Haslem received an athletic scholarship from the University of Florida in Gainesville. However, He was undrafted by NBA in 2002. He was offered a training camp spot with the Atlanta Hawks. After being released by Atlanta at the start of the 2002-2003 NBA season he joined the French LNB Pro A club Chalon-sur-Saone and averaged 16.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
It was on August 6, 2003, when Haslem signed with his hometown team, the Miami Heat. During his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and helped the team advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. On August 2005 he re-signed with the Miami Heat. Haslem led the team to their first NBA title with a 4-2 win against the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals.
