The Golden Globes will be held in California in less than a week, and Jerrod Carmichael will be in charge of the event. The 35-year-old actor, director, writer, and producer was born in North Carolina and now lives in Los Angeles.

He had his own NBC show, worked with Tyler, the Creator and Jay-Z, was hired by Quentin Tarantino, produced the Hulu series Ramy, and won an Emmy Award last year for writing his HBO comedy special, Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel. So, he has a lot of skills, but most people in the United Kingdom haven’t heard of him yet.

Here’s what you need to know about the 35-year-old multihyphenate who is about to become famous around the world.

He Even Had His Own Television Show

In 2007, Carmichael moved to Los Angeles to try to make a living as a comedian. He started out by playing at open mic nights, and over time he became known. Some of the highlights of her early career were her appearances at the 2011 Just for Laughs festival in Montreal and in the 2014 comedy special Love at the Store, which was directed by Spike Lee.

Between 2015 and 2017, he worked with filmmaker Nicholas Stoller to make The Carmichael Show. The three-season NBC sitcom about Carmichael’s made-up family got a lot of attention because it talked about some serious issues.

The Atlantic said in a 2016 article about the second season that the show’s short first season looks at “things like transgender rights, Black Lives Matter, and obesity among African Americans.” This year’s topics are just as relevant as last year’s, and each heated debate is just as entertaining as ever.”

He Appeared on Saturday Night Live

In April 2022, he was the host of Saturday Night Live. This was just a few days after he said he was gay on his comedy show, Rothaniel. Carmichael got a lot of new fans after his 6-minute opening monologue, in which he joked that he “may be the least famous host in SNL history” and talked about Will Smith’s Oscar slap without bringing it up.

On YouTube, one fan said, “This was maybe the smoothest SNL opening monologue I’ve ever seen,” and another said, “Arguably the funniest host monologue in a very, very long time.”

What Will He Do Next?

Carmichael will then be in Yorgos Lanthimos’s next movie, Poor Things, which doesn’t have a release date yet. The movie is about a woman whose scientist father brings her back to life.

It also stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and Margaret Qualley. In this Freud-meets-Frankenstein story, the woman’s brain is replaced by the brain of her unborn child.
