Kelsea Ballerini says she knew that the excitement of a marriage would wear off, but she had been waiting for something similar for far too long. At that point, she decided to end her marriage to Morgan Evans.
Ballerini said on the Tell Me About It With Jade Iovine podcast that she was sure she would know when it was time to make such a big choice. She says that she is “really in tune with herself” and “very intuitive.”
“For a while, I thought, ‘OK, this is just a new phase of a relationship,’ because, you know, relationships,” says Ballerini. “And it won’t always be rainbows and butterflies… I thought for a long time, “Oh, this is just the glitter wearing off.” In fact, that’s what happens. ‘Then you have to wait a while for it to come back. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn’t.”
This summer, the singer, who is 29 years old, told Evans, who is 37, that they were splitting up. Last month, it was done. They had been married for almost five years but didn’t have any kids. Since they broke up, she has had a friend stay with her every night.
She tells Iovine, “At the end of the day, it’s such a disservice and a dishonour to yourself if you know something is wrong and you stay.” “The one emotion I refuse to feel is shame… You can judge me for it if you want to.”
The divorce news came just a few weeks before Ballerini’s new album, Subject to Change, came out. However, the album was finished before the news came out, and she hasn’t said that any of the songs were about her failing marriage.
Evans has released one sad song about how he feels after the breakup. It’s called “Over For You,” and it came out last month with a vulnerable music video.
